Galactic Astronomy Challenge

Galaxies

Today we have nine questions, and we will take fifteen minutes to complete the quiz.

Please get out a clean sheet of paper and a No. 2 pencil and prepare for today’s Astronomy Challenge

If you find a mistake, please let me know. Do your best.

The topic today: galaxies

You have fifteen minutes to complete the quiz. Begin now.

  1. Galaxies are categorized by the shapes found in the Hubble “tuning fork.” A disk galaxy with a dominate bulge would be a Type Sa. What is the Type for a spiral with no nucleus?
  2. What type of galaxy is designated “SB”?
  3. A Type E0 galaxy is a not a spiral galaxy. What shape is it?
  4. The Coma Cluster is a group of more than 3,000 galaxies about 280 million light years away. This galactic cluster, as well as other rich clusters are dominated by what shape galaxy?
  5. Galactic clusters that are less dense than the Coma Cluster tend to be dominated by what shape galaxy
  6. What’s the name the optically brightest galaxy outside the Milky Way Galaxy?
  7. Although the universe is expanding, parts are still bound together (or, maybe just held back) by what force?
  8. In our Local Group, there are 26 galaxies. Only 3 are easily visible without a telescope. Name one of them,
  9. Some galaxies are named after the discoverer (Bode’s Galaxies), or the constellation (Andromeda Galaxy.) What’s the third inspiration for a galactic name such as “Bear’s Paw” (NGC 2537), the “Exclamation Mark Galaxy” and the ”Integral Sign Galaxy” (UGC 03697)?
